You’re Going to Enjoy Content Creation

This article is for your mindset when you are saying to yourself, this excites me, & I want to share it with people. This is your start! YOU CAN DO THIS!

First of all, a lot of people do not consider content creation a “real business”. It takes less than a minute of typing in your search bar on google to realize that it is a billion dollar industry (actually projected to be 480 type of billions by 2027) & only going to continue expanding in many forms. Let’s just get that out of the way. You will also encounter a lot of people as a content creator who do not get it. Plain & simple. It’s not their thing, they really have no idea it’s a thing, or just don’t take it seriously. Let’s also learn to immediately drown out those people & put them all to the side. I call these people energy vampires. If someone doesn’t get the concept, don’t bother explaining it to them. They are also not your target audience. Your co workers at your office, your family, your close friends, the people who doom scroll all day but never once comment, you are going to remind yourself that these people are not your target audience either. You love them, you know them, but they are not usually the ones to share your content, they aren’t the ones who will jump at buying anything you’re selling, they are just scrolling along the social media rabbit hole. Again plain & simple, nothing wrong here. Keep it going & also put these people to the side in your mind.

We got out some of the things that could cross your mind if you are just starting to create content. I promise you that your co workers do not care about you that much & neither does your elementary school classmate. Now that we have established all of these right off the bat, you are now free to think about what you like to talk about, think about, where you like to go, where you’re headed, the things you have written about, the things you see that inspire you…

This I believe is the place where your content should begin. If something is pulling you & you want to share it, PLEASE JUST DO IT. I saw Mel Robbins break down this iconic Nike tagline by the way, & she’s spot on about the word “just” in just do it. Just signals all of the hesitation to do something. This is probably my #1 advice for getting started. JUST START.

The best thing to remember after is make it enjoyable for yourself. Start with the things that genuinely interest you. I’m not talking about content creation for businesses here. Let’s make that very clear here because I do think there’s different ways to start. I’m talking about you as an individual wanting to share things you are interested in. Again there are a million videos online that will break down scheduling posts, etc. I really want to take care of your mindset before you start. I want you to set an intention.

Example: I want to create thrifting videos for women who work 9-5’s, & they don’t have the time to think about how to put together different outfits.

This is a great place to start. You are being specific about who your page is for here & you’re solving a problem they have with the lack of time. We can keep breaking this down further, but let’s keep your intention clear. Your intention is making busy women’s lives easier. This gives you a sense of purpose as a creator which I think is important. You should feel connected to the content you are creating right from the start. Please do not create content that you see everyone doing out there just to get started. I promise you it won’t be enjoyable, & you won’t feel connected.

This is just 1 example of so many topics. Everything is content, & you can always pivot. I actually think pivots make content creation fun. We are multi-dimensional beings who change on a daily, weekly, monthly, & yearly basis. I don’t think it’s fair to expect that we will want to share about the same things as dynamic & expanding individuals. Change is a great thing, & I think your content can change as you go! I think there is so much advice out there that really all contradict which I feel could really deter someone from wanting to give it a go! So many things being said I feel have contributed to my own burn out in the past & so many things have now entered the field energetically in the social matrix that can really be off putting which leads me to my next point.

Comparison really is the thief of joy. You have to really focus on your own lane. It’s such an easy trap to start looking at how other creators are doing…& I get it. I really do get the temptation here, & it’s almost human nature to start doing this even when you are just getting started. DO NOT DO THIS. It’s one of the fastest ways to loose the joy you initially felt when you finally said yes I’ll start. You can learn from other people don’t get me wrong here. You can definitely engage with other creators. In fact, I highly encourage this. I am referring to the mind when it starts to have bad days, off days, sad days, the days when things easily trigger us. Then you find yourself scrolling…comparing…& then you start feeling like shit…or worse like quitting…it’s a tempting & easy slippery slope. You sort of have to have a focused & intentional relationship with your social media use. I say this as someone who has made so many mistakes myself. Social media is a rabbit hole that can easily suck you in for hours on end. You may not realize it, but you are taking on SOOOOO MUCH ENERGY as you are scrolling & scrolling for hours. This is the #1 goal of advertisers right? To keep everyone inside the social matrix. This is a whole other topic, but I say this to point out that while you may be saying to yourself that you are not affected by comparison, you may be unintentionally comparing yourself mindlessly while endlessly scrolling through your feed. Burnout is a very real thing not just in real life but from doomscrolling on social media. This is what it says online:

“Doomscrolling" refers to the act of compulsively scrolling through social media or news feeds, particularly when the content is overwhelmingly negative or distressing, often leading to increased anxiety or negative emotions

The very thing you are creating content on can in fact also hurt you if not handled with intention. This is why I think social media breaks are so important as a creator. I think being intentional with how much time you are online, being mindful of what shows up in your feed & who, being mindful about what you are contributing to the conversation, I think it all carries weight. I also think it conserves your creative energy & prevents burnout. I highly recommend resetting your algorithm, clearing out your in feed posts & redirecting the things that the algorithm shows you. We are in modern times where AI is very present, but you can still redirect what is being shown to you. There are settings in IG that allows you to literally reset the algorithm. I cannot recommend this enough so that the things you look at & what gets shown to you is actually what you want to see! This keeps your time when you are logged in, hopefully more positive & uplifting!

Your pure intentions can be felt online. I really believe this! You can tell when people are not coming from a real place. So focus your attention on creating your own little corner of the internet. Let the news be the news. Let people find news on those feeds. Let people find your world, invite them in, continue to keep in mind how you want someone to feel after leaving your world…cultivate your own space. This is the best way I can illustrate your feed. You are inviting people into your home. A little piece of your mind. A peek into your world through the lens & voice that is all your own.

Everything is an open invitation. Not everyone is visiting to stay a while. This isn’t where your focus should be. When you are just starting & finally got over the initial falling down a cliff feeling of putting yourself out there, I truly believe that you have to remember to start, to avoid comparison & doom scrolling, & to keep your energy solely for creation! You have to start with a clear intention & keep your energy where it matters. Once you start creating & sharing, I guarantee you won’t think twice. You’re not going to look back. You’re not going to wonder if Stephen in HR checked your last post. You’re not going to ask your childhood friends what they thought about your reel. You’re not going to scroll hours in & compare other posts to yours. These are all joy stealers. You are going to start thinking about your next posts, your next trip, your next concepts, your next ideas, you are going to start embodying yourself as a joyful creator!

Rooting for you my friend!

Xx Catherine
